Marie Fitchet understands what hospitality is all about – after all she learned it at her mother's knee. Merwede Guest House and B&B was started in 1959 by Marie's parents and the tradition continues. This family business has been in operation for 48 years, first as a legendary boarding house where thousands of happy guests spent a night or stayed for a week or a month and return every year.
Situated in the centre of the horseshoe, this establishment, a Georgian-style building (part of Graaff-Reinet's historical heritage) with an elegant facade decorated with “broekielys” and warm interior dotted with many antiques, welcomes each guest with homey warmth and comfort. It has always been their ideal to provide affordable accommodation, so, whether you need a place to rest for just one night or need to stay in Graaff-Reinet for a few days, or weeks, Merwede has room for you.
Philip and Marie insist on providing excellent 24 hour service. They will fetch and deliver travelers to and from the bus station or airstrip in the evening, arrange takeaways for those exhausted guests who just want to relax and not move. They will even provide “padkos” for those who wish to get an early start.
While within easy walking distance from most restaurants and the shopping area, Marie is willing to prepare a good home cooked meal by arrangement (guests are more than welcome to provide their own beer and wine). There is also a small communal fully equipped kitchen for those who prefer to cater themselves. A stoep braai can be organised for special events e.g. the Dolphin Rally which is held annually in Graaff-Reinet.
Accommodation is provided in 9 rooms, from singles to those sleeping 4 or 5 making Merwede an ideal place for families and small tour groups. Merwede cater for all - whether for a group, a family or a single tourist, there is a place for everyone. While some of the rooms are en-suite, there are communal bathrooms as well.
A full breakfast is served with Marie's own home made jams in the dining room – anyone with special dietary needs should let Marie know.
Many guests have commented to Marie and Philip that they feel as if they were part of the family. This is what they strive for, to create a homey, comfortable environment where guests arrive as strangers and leave as friends. They have deliberately avoided “becoming upmarket” (Marie's words), providing clean, comfortable rooms at affordable prices.
Our tarrifs are as follows - high season
With private Bathroom - R220.00 per person
With communual Bathroom - R200.00 per person
Breakfast - R50-00 per person
Dinner on request - R65-00 per person
Rooms are smoke free and smoking area is outside
